Nourished

Huber, Lia. Nourished: A Memoir of Food, Faith & Enduring Love with Recipes. New York, USA: Convergent Books. 2017.

SUMMARY:
Part travel guide, part cookbook, and part personal exploration, Nourished is a memoir of a life surrounded by food. As a food writer. recipe developer, consultant, entrepreneur and blogger, author Lia Huber shares a recount of her journey to faith, food, and community. Written in an easy, more conversational manner, she chronicles portions of her life, ending each section with a related recipe. Finding her purpose through food and faith, Lia eventually made the connection though her adventures are far from over.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Expecting more of a cookbook than a memoir, I actually was not disappointed but found the book, Nourished, to be quite interesting. Liking her style of writing, I found myself immersed in pieces of the book though I only intended to scan it at first. Drawn into her life experiences, I enjoyed the travel aspects as well as the family, food, faith and community elements. Perhaps some of the included recipes are a bit out of my grasp but are appealing non-the-less. A perfect book for a reader compelled by travel and food; this is a book I am actually glad I read.

Love & Care For The One And Only You

Adams, Michelle Medlock. Love & Care For The One And Only You: 52 Inspirations. Franklin, TN: Worthy Publishing. 2015.

SUMMARY:
loveandcarefortheoneandonlyyouMaking the choice to be healthy and strong isn’t always easy even though it may be the correct decision. As a certified fitness instructor, author Michelle Medlock Adams provides encouragement, coaching, compassion and empathy through the included 52 inspirations. Personal stories, scripture verses, power prayers, positive reminders, healthy hints and delicious recipes all provide the necessary motivation to meet those goals, rather running a 5K, losing weight, eating healthier, or an ultimately larger goal, all linked to spiritual guidance. Taking care of the one and only you has never been better…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Having increased my own fitness goals for the New Year, I found Love & Care For The One And Only You to be perfectly timed. Like a conversation with a good friend, reading the inspirations, pondering over them, thinking about them while working out, and then rewarding myself with one of the healthy treats, this book made looking after me (for that little bit of time) enjoyable and productive. I especially liked the scripture verses which complemented each three or four page devotion along with the “work your words” and “healthy hints” sections. Easy to read yet full of meaning, this is definitely a book I would recommend to those needing that extra support to meet their goals (which is just about everyone)!

Let Food Be Your Medicine

Colbert M.D., Don. Let Food Be Your Medicine: Dietary Changes Proven To Prevent Or Reverse Disease. Franklin, TN: Worthy Publishing. 2016.

SUMMARY:
letfoodbeyourmedicineBattling his own chronic disease, Dr. Don Colbert persevered until he found a natural way to curb the disease. Sharing his thoughts, discoveries, ideas and faith, in his new book, Let Food Be Your Medicine, the author tackles diets, diseases (cardiovascular, arthritis, cancer, inflammation, Dementia, Autism and mental illness), menus, supplements and gluten, all with solid evidence. Closely relating diet to health, obesity, physical activity, pain, and stress are also discussed. Recipes, menu plans and lifestyle choices round out this well organized book.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
As not only a healthy lifestyle book but also offering encouraging, faith-based, natural alternatives, I found some very interesting concepts on different ways to deal with specific diseases. Personally preferring to naturally heal and prevent diseases before they attack, I thought the suggested changes and choices made sense. Simple items like adding more lemons and limes to the diet (very good in smoothies by the way), eating more fruits and vegetables, eliminating excessive sugar, and limiting the amount of red meat can all have profound affects on health in a very doable manner. Well organized and well written, this will be a book I will keep on my shelf as well as information I will share with family and friends.

Prescription for Life

Furman (MD, FACS), Richard. Prescription for Life: Three Simple Strategies to Live Younger Longer. Grand Raids, MI: Revell Publishing. 2014.

SUMMARY:
prescriptionWith years of experience as a vascular surgeon, Dr. Richard Furman shares how to live younger, longer and healthier. Citing three strategies to follow which allow you to live life to the fullest, healthiest and longest possible, Prescription for Life lays the foundation.  While changing his own life, he hopes to allow you to change yours too…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
With so many diets and exercise books on the market these days, I started to read this book a bit skeptically. Not far into the book though, I realized this was a real approach to healthy living, not just a fad. Through extensive research, personal experience and quite possibly some (not so common) common sense, Dr. Furman shows how choices can affect consequences. Weight, food and exercise are a few of the items which can determine various cancer risks, dementia and dysfunctions. I found this book to be informative, thought and action provoking, a direction towards a healthier lifestyle and definitely meant to be re-read and shared with family and friends. Here’s to a healthier life!
