Before You Hit Send

Eggerichs, PhD, Emerson. Before You Hit Send: Preventing Headache and Heartache. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishing. 2017.

SUMMARY:
Everyone has been there…sending the immediate message, only to regret it later. In his new book, Before You Hit Send, author Dr. Emerson Eggerichs hopes to help put the brakes on those messages sooner than later. Working through four important criteria for messages, both written and spoken, each message should pass through the “Is it True, Is it Kind, Is it Necessary, and Is it Clear” test. With explanations of each area as well as related scripture verses, thoughts, personal stories and self examinations, the book also includes ideas for actions if that message was sent too quickly.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Well organized, easy to follow, interesting to read and right on target, this thought-provoking, encouraging and highly applicable book should be required reading. Taking his advice to heart, I hope to redirect my communication to qualify through the four criteria presented in Before You Hit Send so as not to have the regrets nor the consequences of miscommunication through haste. A very good book with great ideas and important actions, I will recommend this book to many of my family and friends.

I Wish He Had Come With Instructions

Bechtle, Mike. I Wish He Had Come With Instructions: The Woman’s Guide to a Man’s Brain. Grand Rapids, MI: Revell Publishing. 2016.

iwishhehadcomewithinstructions

SUMMARY:
Through explanation, compassion, thoughtfulness and lots of humor, author and event speaker Mike Bechtle, tries to explain the uniqueness of a man’s brain in terms a woman can understand. While exploring the role of the male brain in relationships, I Wish He Had Come With Instructions gently guides towards an understanding of the male communication process, including actions, listening (or lack of it), feelings, conflict, missions, and silence. With witty examples, personal stories, straight-forward explanations and tons of encouragement, this author’s book is sure to answer some very evasive questions for women…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Is it truly even possible to understand how men think? However, it must be easier than even trying to understand women!  Loving his last book, You Can’t Text a Tough Conversation, I knew I had to read this one and once again, found myself nodding in agreement quite often. Obviously wired very differently from women, author Mike Bechtle not only examines the differences but celebrates the uniqueness between the brains of men and women. I enjoyed the humor throughout along with the serious undertones supporting the necessity of strong communication. Perfect for relationships of all levels and stages, it would be great for a sermon topic, Bible study, marriage encounter or pre-marriage counseling. I will definitely continue to search for his newest books as well as reference this one as needed. Adorable cover and title, too!

You Can’t Text A Tough Conversation

Bechtle, Mike. You Can’t Text A Tough Conversation: #RealCommunicationNeeded. Grand Rapids, MI: Revell Publishing. 2015.

SUMMARY:
youcanttextatoughconversationLOL…TTYL…TMI…JK…very real communication today yet lacking depth, emotion, connections and true conversation. Lack of face-to-face communication seems almost the norm these days yet author Mike Bechtle, in his new book, You Can’t Text A Tough Conversation, explains how conversation works, what healthy communication sounds like, the necessary skills in communication, the effective connection through strong, though sometimes tough, conversations and the ensuing results. Trust, ownership, expectations, relations, confidence, responses, and respect issues all figure into efficient exchanges…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Actually a book on communication, I found myself nodding my head in agreement so many times, my neck hurt! Truly an engaging, crucial, significant book on an important topic, not only does it offer ways to improve communication skills but it also helps explain how we got here. Living in a different type of world (due to technology), the method of communication may have changed yet the key ingredients are still consistent. Texting has surpassed the phone call as the major means of communication yet lacks the depth of face-to-face conversation; appropriate in some instances, texting a tough conversation just doesn’t work. I especially found interesting the reasons for responses we give (criticism, negative thoughts, lack of listening, mistrust, emotions, pride) as well as the connection chapters. Well-written in an easy to read manner with just the right amount of humor and seriousness, I definitely will check out this author’s other books.              IMHO…GR8! (In My Humble Opinion…great!)
