This Life I Live

Feek, Rory. This Life I Live: One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishing. 2017.

Growing up in rural America with little money and less direction, country singer and award winner Rory Feek shares bits of his life culminating with his greatest love story. As an American country and bluegrass duo, nothing prepared him for the loss of the love of his life. Sharing his wife Joey’s courageous battle with cancer, Rory Feek managed to cope and in turn, bless others with his story. Well written, honest, heartbreaking and healing, This Life I Live may change your own life, or at least make you love better and live stronger…

Not necessarily a fan of all memoirs nor a fan of country music, I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. Straight-forward in a realistic yet graceful manner, I found myself drawn into Rory and Joey’s story before I even realized it. Easy to read yet with a deeper message, This Life I Live celebrated life through mourning, happiness through sadness, and memories through meaning. So glad I took the chance on a book I would have normally passed on, I can only recommend this book to all.   (Tissue alert- have plenty on hand.)

Honest Wrestling

Joslin, K. Howard. Honest Wrestling: Questions of Faith when Attacked by Life. Bloomington, IN: WestBow Press/ Thomas Nelson. 2012.

Written as an account of the immense struggle during his wife’s battle with cancer, author K. Howard Joslin shares the events leading up to the diagnosis, the treatment plans, the emails to friends and family, the prayers offered by many, the effect on the children, as well as the thoughts and feelings of both Howard and his wife, Ann. Putting the entire event into perspective, including a major move across country, a job loss, treatment plans and results, unfailing faith yet questioning of God and His will, the power of prayer, the devotion of friends and the future of both his children and himself, Honest Wrestling details it all in a memoir complete with a bit of humor, serious truths and lots of tears…

Not quite sure what I would find when opening the cover, I was deeply moved as I started to read. Through honest accounts of thoughts, feelings, prayers, hope, despair and actions, I discovered the reactions of people going through a devastating circumstance can be similar. Being reminded that God is good no matter the situation, and that events are used by God to refine our character and faith, I appreciated the bits of humor in this difficult matter along with feeling the experienced pain. Useful as a book to share with those dealing with cancer themselves or knowing someone afflicted with it, the perseverance of faith was encouraging.

Fight Back With Joy

Feinberg, Margaret. Fight Back With Joy: Celebrate More, Regret Less, Stare Down Your Greatest Fears. Brentwood, TN: Worthy Publishing. 2015.

fightMaking the hard decision to fight back with joy instead of depression, guilt or anger is anything but easy. With wit, sass and bluntness, Margaret Feinberg shares her own personal story of a cancer diagnosis and how she committed to fight back with joy and determination. Easy to apply to any of life’s greatest battles, Fight Back With Joy will encourage, direct, support and perhaps even put a smile on your face during a difficult time…

With lots of sound advice, I found this book to be so inspirational. Sharing her own hard breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, Margaret Feinberg explains how she faced it with humor, thankfulness, celebration and ultimately…Joy. Sure at times she must have wanted to take the easy road by expressing anger and accepting defeat, the author actually persevered with joy, faith, boldness and bravery to overcome challenging circumstances. Especially supportive and reassuring for cancer patients (due to her first-hand knowledge and experience), Fight Back With Joy is also inspiring as a life-attitude in the center of demands.
