Photographs From The Edge

Wolfe, Art. With Sheppard, Rob. Photographs From The Edge: A Master Photographer’s Insights On Capturing An Extraordinary World. New York, NY: Amphoto Books. 2016.

photogrpshfromtheedge

SUMMARY:
Author, speaker, educator and award winner photographer, Art Wolfe, teams up with author, editor and photographer, Rob Sheppard, to share a book full of stunning photographs, educational and interesting information about each picture, and photo tips on best capturing the image. With gorgeous pictures covering half page, full page and two page spreads, the topics range from wildlife, to landscapes, to people- all full of brilliant color, strength and emotion. Animals, cities, cultures, celebrations and many more grace the pages with an account of each, information about the pictured topic and photo suggestions. An elaborate feast for the eyes with so much more…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Not only did I enjoy paging through this book and reading about the surrounding moment of each photograph, I learned quite a bit about each subject. The accompanying photo tips were so user-friendly; rather than lecturing on the camera, lens, film, etc to use, Art Wolfe mentions the angle, level, distance and thought-process to capture a genuine picture. (He suggests watching and anticipating the animal’s actions and behavior; thus, achieving a more intimate photo.) Overall, an excellent book with so many facets that I will keep yet share with others.

Broth & Stock

McGruther, Jennifer. Broth & Stock from the Nourished Kitchen. USA: Ten Speed Press. 2016.

brothandstock

SUMMARY:
In her newest book, Broth and Stock, food educator and author Jennifer McGruther shares her messages of simplicity, patience, thrift and nourishment associated with broths and stocks. As the basis for soups, stews, and sauces, the importance of broths and stocks serves not only nutritional value but also frugality in not wasting any portions. Explaining the history, process and variety of the different liquids, varying recipes are also included utilizing the various broths and stocks. Though the focus is mainly on soups and stews, the uses for the homemade brews could easily be expanded. With beautiful accompanying photography, the Broth and Stock cookbook will prove to be a vital part in the kitchen.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Following the newest trend of bone broths and stocks, I quickly realized this trend is very retro…my mom used to make homemade broths and stocks as did many people years ago. For many assorted reasons for using these juices, this cookbook also includes many healthy options for vegetables, soups, stews, sauces and chowders. Using everyday pantry items with homemade broths only serves to increase the adaptability of the recipes as well as providing a hearty meal. Equally important, I appreciated the messaging on sustainability of the fish from Alaska, something everyone needs to heed for the necessary conservation of the oceans.

The photography of many of the recipes only enhances the book even more…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
As a thicker, oversized, glossy-paged, beautifully photographed, choke-full cookbook of healthy recipes, this has to be one of my favorite cookbooks in the kitchen. Admittedly, I may not use every ingredient found within the recipes; however, they are easy enough to swap due to personal preferences of taste. (Sorry, no to sardines!) I have found many easy, truly healthy ways to improve my meals and snacks (Broccoli Bites and Skillet Fish With Superslaw are two of the best). Absolutely a book to gift as well as keep!

bee-friendlygarden

SUMMARY:
With more than 30 percent of our food crops as well as 70 percent of the foods we eat depending and benefiting from bee pollination, all types of bees are vitally important to the earth. Stress, parasites, pesticides, habitat loss, and urban development have all recently led to the loss of our friends, the bees. Complimented by gorgeous photographs of bees and gardens, The Bee-friendly Garden is sure to inspire…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Having recently studied the importance of bees and their landscape needs, this beautiful book was perfect as the next step. Along with learning about bee habitats, I also learned quite a bit about all the different types of native bees, from markings and colors to flight patterns (the Honeybee is capable of flying in bad weather due to their ability to shiver and raise their temperature). Not only interesting but so necessary in the preserving of the bee, this book is sure to delight, teach and improve gardens country-wide…I know my front garden will be all the better for it!

SUMMARY:
powerfulmomentsinthepresenceofGodWith stunning photography accompanied by scripture verses and a short message seemingly written from God, Powerful Moments In The Presence Of God is a beautiful book full of grace, beauty and faith. Perfect as a gift or personal use, the devotional quality in this glossy, full-color, smaller hardcover version presents very well. Through her camera lens and writings, author Lorraine Marie Varela enjoys drinking coffee, traveling, meeting people and sharing the love of God.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Though not sure I encountered each devotion in the intended manner, I realize time with God is personal in each relationship with Him. From my perspective, I enjoyed the beautiful photography, the scripture appearing with each photo, the lay-out of the book, and the ability to use it as a devotional even though I may not have made some of the same connections between the photos and the messages. Still, a gorgeous little devotional book definitely worth sharing.

The Broad Fork

Acheson, Hugh. Allen, Rinne (Photography). The Broad Fork: Recipes for the Wide World of Vegetables and Fruits. NY: Clarkson Potter/ Publishers. 2015.

SUMMARY:
broadforkBorn of a neighbor’s question on what to do with kohlrabi, along with a desire to live and support locally, chef Hugh Acheson tackles and shares many recipes for regionally grown vegetables and fruits. Usually with three simpler recipes for each item as well as a more complex and detailed recipe, The Broad Fork encompasses vegetables and fruits generally found at farmer’s markets, ingredients readily available, but also some more obscure items, all making for an interesting and educational opportunity. Gorgeous photographs accompany most recipes with easy to understand and follow directions, set up according to seasons.

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Stunning! Not only wonderful as a cookbook but beautiful as a coffee table book too! Though I do not plan on using each recipe (due to availability, taste and time), there are several, no actually many, recipes which I will utilize often. Running to the farmer’s market upon receiving and opening this book, just the concept of eating more vegetables and fruits, especially in new and creative manners, is exciting! (Slow-cooker apple butter, chilled avocado soup, radish and cucumber sandwiches are a few of the favorites…so far!) Excellent to give as a gift or for personal use, this cookbook will grace my counter frequently. Bon appetit!!
