Bread Revolution

Reinhart, Peter. Bread Revolution: World-class Baking with Sprouted & Whole Grains, Heirloom Flours & Fresh Techniques. Ten Speed Press: Crown Publishing. 2014.

SUMMARY:
breadCooking, baking and even breads have evolved in so many different ways, it can be hard to stay up-to-date. Taking the turmoil out of baking bread, Peter Reinhart offers helpful advice for both beginners and experienced bakers. Full of explanations, definitions, suggestions, and pictures, Bread Revolution will change the way you bake bread and how you view yourself as an accomplished chef…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Being newer to the bread-making scene, I was excited to find a book to make the process healthier while successful. With explanations of different grains, flours and techniques, I was able to decipher what I wanted to use while choosing my desired outcome for the bread. Though not a book for everyone, I found this book very educational albeit a bit involved for the average cook. Actually making a few of the recipes though intrigued me to further investigate other methods, tools, ingredients and recipes. A beautiful book for a bread enthusiast, a natural baker or pastry chef; although, sure to delight even a beginner baker with an interest and available time to explore the recipes..

Next

Vanderbloemen, William. Bird, Warren. Next: Pastoral Succession That Works. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Publishing group. 2014.

SUMMARY:
nextEventually every church has to experience change, specifically the changing of the Pastor. William Vanderbloemen and Warren Bird suggest being proactive in the succession rather than reactive. Through conversations, acceptance, reality acknowledgements, and generational difference admissions, Next leads the way to a church being truly prepared for change…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
It is going to happen…there is going to be a pastoral change in every church. Being ready, or at least cooperative, can help and/ or save a church great distress. Next is a very timely book sharing the differences in generations (half-time Pastors, career changes, Baby Boomer retirements), future options, and the necessity of honest and direct conversations. The three sections of the book clearly define important issues from planning, to being the exception and to transitioning. I appreciated the fact that the goal of this publication is to formulate an idea for the church and make sure most everyone is comfortable with the facts, allowing the church to hold its direction and experience a smooth procession. Interesting enough, these concepts could also be applied to life situations as well.

At Bluebonnet Lake

Cabot, Amanda. At Bluebonnet Lake: Texas Crossroads series. Grand Rapids, MI: Revell Publishing. 2014.

SUMMARY:
blueHigh-powered and fast-paced Kate Sherwood can barely slow down her life enough to accept her widowed grandmother’s invite to join her at Rainbow’s End, a resort her grandparents spent a vacation at over fifty years ago. Though changed, the resort still has potential especially when it comes to offering experiences to guests. Perhaps a late-life romance, maybe a slowed-down love interest, and perchance a young lady helping her mom find happiness again…all at Bluebonnet Lake!

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
As a reader who judges a book by the cover, I am glad I pursued this novel after not finding the cover particularly alluring. As a contemporary Christian romance though, I surprisingly enjoyed it albeit that is not usually my chosen genre. Quite feasibly though, I believe the reason I was drawn into the storyline had to do with the writing style of Amanda Cabot, an author I have not yet read (hard to believe, I know). With a good dose of faith, quite a bit of romance, a few surprises, and the promise of a sequel, I must admit I will return to Bluebonnet Lake, in the heart of Texas.

Hope For The Caregiver

Rosenberger, Peter. Hope For The Caregiver: Encouraging Words to Strengthen Your Spirit. Brentwood, TN: Worthy Publishing. 2014.

SUMMARY:
caregiverEmpowered by taking care of his wife, Peter Rosenberger shares what he has learned through the many care-giving years. Through quotes, Bible verses, personal stories and encouragement, Hope For The Caregiver offers caregivers (past, present and future) just what they need most…the motivation and power to continue, even during emotional turmoil, doubt, exhaustion and isolation. With a myriad of ideas from taking a vacation, attending church, enjoying laughter, finding support and a firm faith, care-giving can mean so much more…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Speaking from experience adds credence to this author, making Hope For The Caregiver even more dynamic. Written as a devotional-type book, it would be perfect as a gift for every caregiver. Being a bit smaller in size would even allow it be portable. I found the thoughts, ideas and reflections to be full of faith and so encouraging. The “Caregiver’s Prayer’ found at the front of the book repeats again at the end of book which had a greater impact on me due to my experience of reading the book. Many people will care for someone in their lives; this book helps to offer comfort and confidence in doing so while assuring that feelings experienced are normal. Most importantly, I learned how necessary it is to keep the person separate from the pain/ condition/ disease and that God has a plan for us all.
