MaryLu Tyndall presents the reader with an exceptional use of the literary technique of flash-forward and flashback. While flash-forward is a difficult element to successfully use, Tyndall incorporates the technique with literary grace. By combining the flash-forwards and flashbacks, the reader is swept into the story by gaining the characters’ perspectives. The slightly disorientating effect that the method naturally produces, was well incorporated into a story that is set at sea. Overall, the resulting effect is a believable set of characters and a vivid setting and context.
